A ribbon cutting ceremony marked the official opening of The Umeya , a 100% affordable housing development located at the border of Skid Row and Little Tokyo. Designed by FSY Architects, the seven-story mixed-use complex brings 175 new homes to the community, with half of the units dedicated to permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless individuals. The event brought together project partners, local leaders, and residents to celebrate the milestone and the meaningful impact it will have on the neighborhood.
Speakers from the development team shared insights into the collaborative effort behind the project, while a resident offered a heartfelt reflection on what it means to have a safe, stable place to call home. The site, formerly home to the Umeya Rice Cake Company, carries deep cultural significance in Little Tokyo, and the new development honors that legacy while providing vital housing and services for the future.
In support of the new residents, Morley Builders donated welcome supplies to help ease the transition into their homes. With amenities including a community center, café, and open courtyards, and targeting LEED Gold certification, The Umeya stands as a model for inclusive, sustainable urban development in Los Angeles.
