The Rancho Las Virgenes Solids Handling and Composting Facility was built to provide the beneficial rescue of wastewater biosolids in response to needs for increased capacity and changes in EPA regulations. The facility digests, dewaters and composts primary biosolids using a fully automated computer-controlled process. Commercially available wood shavings are added to biosolids for composting, or alternative amendments such as green wastes are implemented. This facility is among the most highly automated of its type in the world. The project included 11 buildings on the 20 acre site.
