LAX ConRAC Honored at the 2023 ACI Southern California Concrete Awards

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) Southern California Chapter Concrete Awards recognizes outstanding and innovative use of concrete in construction.

We are honored to have our project, the LAX Consolidated Rent-A-Car Facility (LAX ConRAC), recognized as a 2023 Concrete Award winner by the ACI Southern California Chapter! The large-scale parking structure was named as a winner in the Infrastructure category. Congratulations to the entire team who contributed to the success of this project, including LA Gateway Partners, PCL Construction, Catalina Pacific, Supply Patriot, Englekirk Structural Engineering, AC Martin, and PGAL.

The new LAX ConRAC facility consolidates 20+ rental car locations in and around the airport into one facility located next to the 405 freeway. Comprising approximately 6.3 million square feet, the LAX ConRAC facility is the largest rental car facility ever built and connects to LAX’s Central Terminal Area via an Automated People Mover (APM) train system. The facility is a major component of LAX’s $5.5 billion Landside Access Modernization Program (LAMP).

Morley Construction Company provided structural concrete for the project, totaling 217,200 cubic yards of cast-in-place concrete for the Ready-Return/Idle Storage structure, a five-level, 5.6 million-square-foot garage consisting of 6,600 ready-return stalls, 10,000 idle storage stalls, and seven underground tunnels/corridors for pedestrian egress. The fifth level includes a rooftop courtyard, customer service buildings, and a platform to receive the termination of the Automated People Mover (APM) trains that will take passengers directly from the terminals to the ConRAC. The project achieved LEED Gold certification. When combined with the attached QTA Structure, the ConRAC facility covers approximately 6.3 million square feet, making it the second-largest concrete building in the U.S. behind only the Pentagon.

Morley’s scope consisted of 48,000 CY of foundations, 24,000 CY of slabs-on-grade, 118,000 CY of elevated decks, 23,000 CY of columns & shear walls, 2,000 CY of fill slabs & toppings, and 2,000 CY of slabs-on-metal decks.

The five-story structure will house five rental car companies representing 13 brands including Enterprise Rent-A-Car Company of Los Angeles, LLC (Enterprise, Alamo, National), The Hertz Corporation (Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty), Avis Budget Car Rental, LLC (Avis, Budget, Payless, Zip Car), Sixt Rent a Car, LLC (Sixt), and Fox Rent A Car, Inc. and DR Car Rental (Fox, EuropCar). During peak activity, a rental car is expected to leave the facility every two seconds.

The Concrete Awards was held on October 26, 2023 at the Westin Bonaventure Downtown LA. A full list of honorees is available on the ACI website.
